The Spirit of Ubuntu Philosophy
"Telling someone yesterday about nearly dying and coming back into my body in the mid-90s, I recalled that one of my huge takeaways was the importance of community. That is what I am hoping to create with the monthly Picture of Health gatherings. A community where we can each monitor and support each other and ourselves in a loving, non judgmental, supportive way inspired by the spirit of Ubantu."
Kit Stapely, January 2022
The late Archbishop Desmond Tutu explained the philosophy of Ubuntu as "the essence of being human. Ubuntu speaks particularly about the fact that you can't exist as a human being in isolation. It speaks about our interconnectedness. [...] We think of ourselves far too frequently as just individuals, separated from one another, whereas you are connected and what you do affects the whole world. When you do well, it spreads out; it is for the whole of humanity." This concept of support, unity and humanity towards others is central to our philosophy at the Clinic and within The Health Generation Society. We know that it is acceptance and affirmation that have more power to change behaviour than shame and punishment.
